The Maryland School for the Blind

Complex Students. Comprehensive Programs. Collaborative Approaches.

Founded in 1853, The Maryland School for the Blind’s mission is to educate children and youth (from infancy to 21) who are blind and visually impaired, including those with multiple disabilities, for functional independence. We are a private, nonprofit school serving more than 800 students each year throughout Maryland – in their homes, local schools, and communities. Nearly 200 of these students are enrolled at our beautiful, 95-acre campus in Baltimore.

Along with the basics - math, reading, science, social studies and career education – enrolled students also receive therapeutic and health care support to assist in developing their highest level of self-sufficiency. Students may also participate in a wide range of extracurricular activities from swimming, goal ball, and track, to service and art clubs and musical stage productions.

We also provide a wide range of outreach services to more than 800 students across the state. When possible, we believe every student should be educated within their home community and at the local community school. Some of these services include diagnostic evaluations; direct instruction; providing textbooks in braille, large print or audio format; orientation and mobility; and training and support for local school systems.
